I have yet to run into a language that's good for every task. I work on financial database software at work, and C++ is great for most of our stuff, but our GUIs are still written in C# (I don't touch them, personally. CLI FTW!)

It really depends on what you want to do with it more than anything else. As others in the thread have said, use the right tool for the job. Either is probably a good language to learn general "programming" on (since they're very similar in syntax). C++ makes it easier to do direct memory management, where C# is probably better if you're looking to use standard Windows forms and the like (GUIs)

Of course, learning C++ is entirely possible. It was my first language. It just wasn't very fun. C# is a much more modern language and more fun/easy to work with.

Also, speed is largely irrelevant when comparing C++ and C#. It's much easier to write good C# code than it is to write good C++ code, so more often than not, C# will outperform C++ in speed.

However, if you compare well written C++ code with well written C# code, C++ usually wins. But most people don't write good C++ code.

Assembly language as with simply programming in machine code, requires you to use code which is unique to the hardware vendors piece of hardware, no 2 companies chips use the same code and therefor it is not as portable as something written in a higher language that has a compiler or interpreter.

This was actually one of the problems Bleem faced when it first released (if you do not remember bleem you are too young or just never gamed at all), it only ran on very specific system setups.

I am not saying there is never a time when it will be superior but more times than not the higher languages are a much better choice.

Learn and MASTER C first. Otherwise you're just a bumbling trying-hard wannabe.
